Friends of the Earth International
In 1999 Peace Boat became an affiliate member of Friends of the Earth International, the world's largest grassroots environment network. Friends of the Earth International, FOEI, is a federation of autonomous environmental organizations from 68 countries that campaigns on the most urgent environmental and social issues of the day, while simultaneously catalyzing a shift toward sustainable societies.

FOEI’s campaigns are organised in three pillars:
Safeguarding Earth Climate Change GMOs Forests Desertification Antarctica Maritime Biodiversity Water/Wetlands
Resisiting Economic Globalisation: International Financial Institutions Corporates Mining
Finding solutions: Trade, Environment and Sustainability Earth Summit Ecological debt

Since joining the network, Peace Boat has been strengthening its ties with FOEI members in several parts of the globe and organized joint activities. These joint activities include educational programs, strategic meetings on board, supporting local advocacy campaigns, and cooperative projects in land.

Strategic meetings on board:

  • On environmental education
    Friends of the Earth from Brasil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina and Chile gather on board in 2000 and 2001 to discuss joint actions for the promotion of the environmental education.
  • On free-trade agreements
    The meeting gather indigenous peoples, afro-descendent and environmentalist from Friends of the Earth Colombia, CENSAT, and 10 other organisations from Colombia, Panama and Ecuador.
