Fundraising for disaster relief after Chile earthquake |
|
|
At
3:34 am on February 27 (local time), an earthquake of (M)8.8 struck the
central part of Chile. As at one day after the earthquake over 700 people
have been killed, and and tens of thousands of people have lost their homes.
It is feared that these numbers will increase even more.
After this terrible tragedy, Peace Boat has launched a fundraising effort for emergency relief for those affected by the disaster in Chile.
Since the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995, Peace Boat has long been involved
in large-scale disaster relief efforts beyond national borders, including after
the tsunami which hit Sri Lanka and the recent earthquake in Haiti. Our aid is
particularly directed to those in regions and communities which are difficult
to be reached by local authorities.
The needs of affected communities at the time of natural disasters changes seriously
with every day. Peace Boat pledges to, based on our past experiences, work together
with the network of local partner organisations nurtured over many years of directly
visiting the community, to work together with local NGOs to deliver aid which
can reach those who are most in need. Peace Boat's main partner in this effort
is CODEFF, a Chilean NGO currently conducting emergency relief efforts in the
city of Concepcion.
Peace Boat's current 68th Global Voyage is also planned to visit the port of
Valparaiso in central Chile. We are thus also considering, upon confirmation
of safety, to directly deliver aid to those affected in Chile.
