Peace Boat launches emergency aid drive
for Haiti Earthquake |
|
|
On January 12, 2010, the Carribbean nation of Haiti was tragically struck by an earthquake of (M)7.0 magnitude. This earthquake has hugely devastated the country, and it is said that up to 100,000 people lost their lives while over three million were made homeless.
Upon receiving news of this unprecedented disaster, Peace Boat has launched a fundraising campaign to support those affected by the earthquake.
Since the Great Hanshin Earthquake, which occurred on January 17, 1995 - almost exactly fifteen years before the Haiti Earthquake - Peace Boat has supported post-disaster relief activities beyond borders around the world in Taiwan, Turkey, Pakistan, Algeria, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Samoa, at times when large scale natural disasters have caused destruction. A particular focus is on supporting regions and communities where the support of local authorities and governments cannot reach the people most in need.
The needs of people affected by this disaster are changing drastically with every day. Based on past experience, Peace Boat will use funds raised to support efforts to provide those affected with items of most urgent need, including food and medical supplies.
