July 3, 2008 100 Hibakusha of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to join Peace Boat Global Voyage
NGO Peace Boat will this autumn invite 100 hibakusha of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to join its global journey around the world (at no cost), and over the 3 month (28 August – 8 December, 2008) sea voyage share their experiences of the atomic bombs with people around the world.

Through visits to 22 countries, this will be a chance to reconsider the realities of nuclear weapons, and build a foundation of global civil society action towards their abolition. Photographic exhibitions on Hiroshima and Nagasaki will be held in ports visited, together with events to share testimonies with local media and youth.

Onboard the ship itself will also be an important venue for the testimonies. Peace Boat participants range from teenagers to retired people, including those who have themselves experienced war. Through the extended time at sea together, this project will provide a chance for Japanese people to also hear directly from hibakusha, and directly learn about the history and experiences which, although having taken place in their own country, they have until now only read about in textbooks. Documentary footage of the testimonies and the voyage itself will also be produced as part of the project.
Since its launch in 1983, Peace Boat has developed a broad international network of NGOs. The voices of hibakusha calling for nuclear abolition is a universal message critically needed by contemporary society. In commemoration of Peace Boat's 25th anniversary, this project will deliver this message globally, and connect hibakusha with citizens, NGOs and youth throughout the world.
