Exchange between European and Japanese Youth 60 years after Hiroshima

Date:

Saturday, July 2, 2005 from 19:00 to 20:00

Place: Port du Havre, quai Pierre Calais onboard the Peace Boat (TSS Topaz), Le Havre, France
Journalists are invited to a press conference onboard the passenger ship, Peace Boat, from 19:00 to 20:00 on Saturday July 2, 2005, where the three organizations, Le Mouvement pour la Paix, La Ville pour la Paix (Gonfreville l’Orcher) and the Japan-based organization Peace Boat will present to the media a joint declaration regarding the failure of the NPT review conference that took place this May in New York. This declaration echoes the call of UN Secretary General Koffi Annan, who has challenged heads of states to take serious measures to resolve the crisis that came out of the failure of the Nuclear NPT Review Conference.

The press conference will follow an exchange program organised in the afternoon of July 2, 2005, in the city of Gonfreville l’Orcher, to which journalists are welcome. Young French, Japanese, Germans, but also one Israeli and one Palestinian, 60 years after Hiroshima, will exchange views on the following topic: “How to deal with a violent past and build a better world?”

Concrete examples of how contemporary youth can make real steps for peace will help to understand how the word “Peace” goes far beyond the concept of the absence of war, to mean a growing culture on a global scale, that is active, constructive and growing.
Profile of partners:
The idea of organizing an international exchange was born from a partnership between the French NGO, Le Mouvement pour la Paix, The city of Gonfreville l’Orcher (“City for Peace”) and the Japanese NGO, Peace Boat, that aims to promote a culture of peace beyond physical and ideological boarders, and to encourage youth to get involved in cooperative projects for peace.
Mouvement pour la Paix:
The Mouvement de la Paix was born in 1949, to oppose nuclear wars and support international relations based on justice, democracy and co-operation between people. Since then, The Mouvement de la Paix lobby for disarmament, and nuclear disarmament in particular, but also against production and transfer of arms, and for the reduction of military budgets.

Le Mouvement pour la Paix Le Havre was the main coordinator of the French network against the war in Iraq.

Gonfreville l’Orcher: City for Peace
In 2000, The city of Gongreville signed the UNESCO Charter for the Decade for a culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World.

Actions have since become more regular and coherent and allowed us to unite all citizens for the same objective by encouraging the participation of citizens, associations, services, and by encouraging workshops about the culture for peace (local educational programme for children).

Associating citizens to act as instructors for children rather than creating a municipal police force is part of Gonfreville’s philosophy to fight against social inequalities and violence.

Peace Boat:
A Japan-based international NGO, Peace Boat’s main activities are focused on the organization of educational voyages in order to promote a culture of peace and exchanges between people. For more information, >>read more

While at sea, the onboard Global University program organizes workshops, conferences and debates on themes like reconciliation, conflict resolution, globalization, human rights, environment, fair trade, and more. All activities are directly linked to the on-land programs and campaigns that we develop with our local partners.

(The young Germans who will participate to the international exchange are all students at the University of Tuebingen. They will travel aboard the Peace Boat for 10 days in the context of their studies for Peace.
