BUENOS AIRES (ARGENTINA) – The ratification of the Climate Change ‘Kyoto Protocol’ will be celebrated in Buenos Aires on December 9 from 19:30 by representatives of organisations from all continents, including communities affected by floods and the Mapuche indigenous community. The celebrations, organized by Peace Boat and Friends of the Earth International, take place in parallel to the 10th Conference of the Parties (COP10) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (6-17 December).

This is the first Conference of the Parties since Russian ratification of the Kyoto Climate Protocol, which brings the Protocol into force early next year: it will become legally binding on its 128 Parties on February 16, 2005.

The Kyoto treaty is the only international treaty aimed at reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases. These talks will continue to develop the rules under which the Protocol is implemented.

Celebrations will include a dance performance and Japanese drums, in addition to a slide show with photos of the world and the message that Severn Suzuki brought to the Rio Earth Summit of 1992. Everybody will be invited to write a message on a banner which will remain in the Buenos Aires square. These messages are for conference delegates and ask them to move forward with urgent emissions cuts and go beyond Kyoto commitments.

The impacts of climate change are already being felt around the world with increasing severity. Despite this, greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise. Friends of the Earth believes the Kyoto Protocol is only the first step in tackling climate change. There is an urgent need for industrialized countries move forward with urgent emissions cuts and go beyond Kyoto commitments.
