Civil Society Organi, will viszations from Northeast Asia, including Zhu Cheng Shan, Director of the Nanjing Massacre Museumit Yasukuni Shrine as part of a civil society consultation meeting on conflict prevention in Northeast Asia.

Following a call by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, a conference on the Role of Civil Society in the Prevention of Armed Conflict will be held at the United Nations Head-quarters in New York in 2005. The conference will explore methods for conflict prevention, and ways to improve cooperation between NGOs, governments and the United Nations.

In preparation, Peace Boat is hosting a regional consultation meeting, calling together 20 representatives from Civil Society Organizations and academics from Seoul, Vladivostok, Beijing, Nanjing, Hong Kong, Taipei, New York and Tokyo. The meeting (February 6 and 8) will discuss the crisis on the Korean Peninsula, the China-Taiwan cross-straits issue, and the Russia-Japan territorial dispute with a view to creating an agenda on how civil society can contribute to preventing these potential armed conflicts.
On February 7, participants will visit the controversial Yasukuni Shrine – a symbol of Japanese militaristic imperialism. Despite protests by China, Korea and other Asian nations, PM Koizumi has insisted on paying homage to the shrine, commenting that he sees no reason to bow to overseas pressure.

Mr. Zhu from Nanjing has been researching and studying the impact of the Japanese occupation on the history of China, as the head of the Nanjing Massacre Museum. Other participants include researchers on Unit 731 and Comfort Women. How will our Asian neighbors view Yasukuni Shrine? Come and join us.
