April 2, 2003 Peace Boat celebrates 20 years of peace-making around the world. World Peace Now Rally and Peace Parade
Twenty years ago in the midst of Japan's history textbook revision scandal, a group of frustrated but creative university students decided to sail to destinations in East Asia on a cruise ship to learn firsthand about the history of the Pacific War from the perspective of the survivors themselves and to give voice to the testimonials collected in Japanese society. Little could they imagine that their one-time project would turn into the international operation that is Peace Boat today. This year marks 20 years of peace-making efforts and the departure of our 41st educational voyage in June. To celebrate these milestones, we are inviting past and prospective participants as well as anyone with an interest in our organisation to join us for a fun weekend retrospective of 20 years' of peace building.
Musical
The gala performance of the onboard musical "A Common Beat" will get the celebratory show on the road the evening of April 5th. Composed largely of young and vibrant dancers, singers many of whom had no previous experience, the musical has been an evolving project onboard overfour voyages. Dealing with themes of peace and cross-cultural understanding and drawing on moves and melodies from five continents of the world, and spotlighting global music culture, 'A Common Beat' is to be showcased before 1200 people in a sold-out show this Saturday night in its only Tokyo performance. Musical enthusiasts from previous Peace Boat voyages are going to spectacular lengths to make this night unforgettable.

In addition to Japanese speakers, guests will join us from Tahiti, USA, Bosnia, El Salvador and other near and far flung places around the world. English translation will be provided. Don't miss this stimulating and meaningful 'relay talk'!

Gala Finale

Peace Boat's history in words, pictures, music and comedy will be narrated by an array of guests, staff and participants. An introduction to current projects and our hopes for the future will also be on offer. All these items with dinner will make for a package not to be missed.

World Peace Now Rally and Peace Parade - April 5th, Yoyogi Park
If you are among the millions of people around the world who think that the current US-led war Iraq is an unacceptable way to deal with international conflict we ask you to join us as part of the global peace movement in a parade on the streets of Tokyo on this Saturday, April 5th. Join thousands of other concerned and compassionate people from Japan and other countries to demonstrate your solidarity in calling for an immediate end of the violence against the Iraqi people. As the world watches this war unfolding, we are seeing innocent civilian deaths, dislocation, ecological disaster and human suffering that will continue for years to come. By taking part, you will add your voice those of governments and global civil society around the globe who are denouncing war and seeking a solution based on "the force of law" rather than "the law of force" derived from principles of social justice and respect for human rights and the environment. Don't just watch the news and read the paper. act on the conviction that what is happening now is wrong and the belief that we can create a better world. Come out on the streets and help us to tell the governments of the world to stop the war, now!
