Collaboration between Peace Boat and the Mayors for Peace Campaign |

Since 2007, Peace Boat has been cooperating with the Mayors for Peace Campaign, which aims to unite mayors around the world to work together towards the abolition of nuclear weapons by the year 2020.
This project was initiated on Peace Boat's 59th Global Voyage for Peace, with a highly successful campaign. The collaboration resulted in six new cities joining the Mayors for Peace: Kochi (India), Piraeus (Greece), Telde (Spain), Santiago de Cuba (Cuba), Guayaquil (Ecuador) and Faa'a (Te Ao Maohi / French Polynesia).
October 27, 2007: Piraeus, Greece
The city of Piraeus is known as the to the Aegean Sea, and has been host to Peace Boat many times over the years. 59th Voyage Director Inoue Nao and International Director Ken Rhodes visited Mayor Panagiotis Fasoulas of Piraeus, received an enthusiastic and supportive welcome. Through a national radio broadcast, Mayor Fasoulas called for all mayors in Greece to join the campaign, providing a great opportunity to raise awareness amongst Greek people about this issue and the abolition movement. Mayor Fasoulas was very keen to learn about Article 9 – the peace clause of the Japanese Constitution – and relate it to his passion to promote peace throughout society. |

November 6: Telde, Las Palmas, Spain
Telde is located in the Canary Islands, close to the northwest corner of the African continent. The town of Telde is known for its Article 9 monument, built in the 1980s during a strong civil movement demanding the closure of US military bases in Spain. Mayor Francisco Santiago invited a group of Peace Boat participants to visit the city hall, where he responded positively to the participants' appeal for Telde to join the Mayors for Peace. |

December 15: Faa'a, Te Ao Maohi / French Polynesia
From 1966 to 1996, Tahiti was the site of 193 nuclear tests conducted by the French government. Although it has now been a decade since France stopped conducting tests in the Pacific region, aftereffects such as serious health damage caused by radiation, continues to affect people throughout the South Pacific, including newborn babies.
Peace Boat visiting Tahiti many times, working together with local people to appeal for proper compensation for their suffering through nuclear testing, and to raise awareness about the issue.
Mr Oscar Temaru, the Mayor of Faa'a and President of Te Ao Maohi / French Polynesia, has been dedicated for years as an energetic leading figure working towards the abolition of nuclear weapons and to bring justice to the people of Tahiti. Peace Boat's visit during the 59th voyage was a significant step towards the shared goal of creating strong ties to be linked to further cooperation between Peace Boat and Tahiti, as well as with the Mayors for Peace. |

Promotion of the Mayors for Peace Campaign is continuing throughout Peace Boat's 60th Global Voyage. The collaboration aims to garner support for the campaign from many more mayors around the world.
