The panel focused on Peace Boat's education programs for peace and sustainability, and their contribution to raising awareness of the need to fulfill the 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Peace Boat is cooperating with UN-NGO-IRENE network and the World Sports Alliance on developing methodology for educating on the MDGs through sports.
Besides the panel, Peace Boat held a side event in partnership with the International Peace Bureau, entitled “Warfare or Welfare? Armed conflict, disarmament and development”, which urged for cooperation between civil society and the United Nations on fulfilling Article 26 of the UN charter. Peace Boat Director, Yoshioka Tatsuya, introduced the Global Article 9 Campaign to Abolish War, citing the critical need to shift resources away from the military, and into sustainable development. Other speakers were Colin Archer of the International Peace Bureau and Jasna Bastic of Peace Boat.
