Under the GPPAC (Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict) framework established through UN-civil society cooperation, representatives of Northeast Asia civil society organizations from Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei and Vladivostok gathered in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia to discuss the current nuclear crisis on the Korean peninsula, and what regional civil society groups can do to work towards lasting peace and security through nuclear disarmament. |

In parallel with the governmental Six-Party Talks being held between North and South Korea, China, Russia, the US and Japan, the meeting focused on three points:
- Supporting the governmental Six-Party Talks in working towards a regional peace mechanism in Northeast Asia;
- Achieving a Northeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (NWFZ);
- Strengthening Mongolia’s single-State NWFZ status (Mongolia has declared nuclear-weapon-free status and gained official recognition from the international community, including nuclear-weapon States through UN resolutions).
The role of civil-society in fostering a supportive environment for the governmental Six-Party Talks, raising public awareness of the issues and challenges facing nuclear disarmament and security cooperation in Northeast Asia were main themes of the meeting.

The meeting was attended by resource persons from South Korea, Aotearoa/New Zealand and the US/Canada, and greatly supported by the Mongolian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as Mongolia itself is a single-State NWFZ and deeply committed to the principles of nuclear disarmament.
