April 30, 2007 On Japan's National Constitution Day, Come Out in Support of Article 9!
On May 3rd, the anniversary of Japan's constitution, people from across Japan will come out in support of Article 9 of the constitution, known around the world as the “Peace Clause” which renounces war and the maintenance of a formal military force by Japan. In a world where military force is increasingly, and unsuccessfully, used to resolve conflict and pursue “national interests,” a renunciation of violence at the national level is a beacon of hope and progress for a more peaceful future that will benefit everyone. Despite this, the Japanese government, pressured by the US and at the great concern of its regional neighbors, is moving to renounce Article 9.

Yet people across Japan and the world are voicing their opinion that the world will not benefit with the addition of another large military force; rather, the world will benefit by governments renouncing violence, and dedicating resources not to weapons to pursue national interest cloaked in excuses of “security” but rather towards building infrastructure for sustainable development and just societies.

Come out to Hibiya Park on May 3rd to show your support for Article 9! A symposium will begin from 1pm, and a peace parade will depart at 3pm. Come decked out in yellow, and any colorful placards, banners, puppets, drums or other instruments are more than welcome. If you can't make it for the symposium, then come for the march! We need to show the government that people want Article 9!
