Peace Boat…Sailing into the World Peace Forum |

Vancouver, Canada – June 23-28, 2006
Peace Boat’s ship, TSS The Topaz, will be sailing into Vancouver for the final day of the World Peace Forum, carrying over 1,000 participants onboard.
We invite those attending the Forum to join us onboard or on-land for one of the following events:

Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution:
Common Treasure of Humankind for Peace
Date and Time: Monday, June 26th – 1pm – 4pm
Venue: SUB 207/209 – UBCB
Support us in launching a “Global Article 9 Campaign” – Peace Boat’s flagship campaign for the year ahead
Article 9 of Japanese Constitution is a unique peace provision that renounces war as a mean for settling international disputes and also prohibits the maintenance of armed forces for this purpose. This workshop will focus on the significance of Japan’s Article 9 as a global common value in promoting disarmament, demilitarization, human security and a culture of peace in the world, as well as a foundation of regional peace, through examining Japan’s achievements and failures. Join us in strategizing a worldwide campaign to uphold Japan’s Article 9 and spread such peace provisions in the world, exploring concrete policies and mechanisms that global citizens can pursue.

Making the Earth Whole: An Integrated Peace Agenda
Date and Time: Wednesday, June 28th – 10am – 12 noon
Venue: Peace Boat’s ship – TSS The Topaz – docked in Canada, Place, Downtown Vancouver
Senator Doug Roche of Canada will join experts from a variety of disciplines in a powerful debate on how nuclear disarmament is imperative to an overall improvement in global peace and security.

Traveling the World, Changing the World:
People to People Diplomacy Onboard Peace Boat

Founded in 1983, Peace Boat has carried over 25,000 people to more than 100 ports around the world through people to people exchange and a variety of Peace Education projects. WPF participants are welcomed to onboard to see Peace Boat’s space, share its work...and to hear about the birth of a new organization, Peace Boat US, and its collaboration with the Hague Appeal for Peace’s Global Campaign for Peace Education. We’d love to have you with us!

Youth, Peace Culture and Nuclear Disarmament
Date and Time: Wednesday, June 28th – 1pm – 4pm
Venue: SUB 207/209 – UBC
What happens when you put an activist young person from each of the Nuclear Weapons States together with hundreds of Japanese and Korean youth on a life-changing voyage to see how war, history and nuclear tensions collide across Japan, China and the Korean peninsula? Youth Worldwide will present this, and other activities, to give ideas of strategies and actions to other youth, and demonstrate the specificity of youth’s involvement in nuclear disarmament.
Presenters: Carah Ong, Hibiki Ouichi, Iain Naughton, Francois Gagnaire, Victoria Scott, Sophie Lefeez, Elias S. E. Deis, Kathleen Sullivan and Global University students (Peace Boat).

Peace Boat Bon Voyage!
Setting Sail – Taking the WPF Messages to the Waves and Beyond
Date and Time: Wednesday, June 28th – 9pm – 11pm
Venue: Canada Place, Downtown Vancouver
After the WPF closing ceremony, join in a Lantern Festival Walk with Peace Boat participants to Canada Place to see Peace Boat’s voyage set sail, carrying onboard the messages, ideas and hopes that have been born out of this forum. The ship will sail at 11pm. Full details are still to be confirmed, but this is certain to be an inspiring celebration and a beautiful end to a long day.
