Campaign to Deliver Blue Tarpaulins for Shelter to the People of Kashmir
After completing a preliminary investigation of the damage from the recent earthquake in Pakistan, Peace Boat has launched a campaign to send blue plastic tarpaulins to help protect the victims in a village near Bagh from the coming winter weather. Bagh is a city located some 50 kilometers south of Muzaffarabad, a central city in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir.
The blue tarps will be bought in China, and transported to Bagh city. Peace Boat staff Chiaki Ebihara (20) left for Pakistan today to help deliver the tarps to destroyed houses and construct emergency shelters for protection against the coming severe winter weather.
“The area is surrounded by mountains over 4000 meters high, and temperatures drop to near freezing during night,” reports Peace Boat staff Tetsutaro Kadowaki (26), who is currently continuing the disaster relief operation in Bagh, Kashmir. “The people here are concerned that snow fall is expected as early as next week, and in such areas where there can be heavy snow I think the relief during the next month will be extremely crucial. By sending as much warm clothing and emergency shelter as possible, we will be able to prevent more people dying from the cold.”
Disaster relief coordinator Takashi Yamamoto (35), who visited the quake-affected area, explains that Bagh is located in the bottom of a valley, and it is difficult to bring aid such as large tents to such mountainous areas. Therefore, to effectively help the remote villages, blue tarps, which are relatively easy to transport, set up, are water proof and provide shelter from the cold, were decided to be the best emergency form of assistance.
Peace Boat has launched an emergency relief fundraising campaign to help pay for and ship the tarps. The tarps, measuring 4 by 3 meters each, will be purchased in China and transported to Pakistan by air and land. The cost for purchasing and transporting the tarpaulins is about 800 yen ($7 US) each.
