Peace Boat Participation in World Social Forum 2005 |

The fifth World Social Forum will be convened in Porto Alegre, Brazil from January 26 - 30, 2005. Peace Boat's delegation will be making presentations in events as follows:
1) "Panel Discussion - Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC)"
This panel will introduce the work of the civil-society initiative GPPAC - a consultative process working from the grassroots to the international level to generate a global agenda for the prevention of armed conflict. GPPAC is purusing its goals and activities through fifteen regional processes, which will develop action agendas to reflect principles and priorities through their regions. Progress reports from the Latin America and Caribbean, and Northeast Asia processes will be presented. The World Federalist Movement, representing the New York based NGO-UN Conflict Prevention Working Group, will update on progress towards a GPPAC conference to be convened at the UN Headquarters in July.

2) "No US Bases Campaign Network - Lessons Learned from the Anti-Bases and Anti-Militarization Struggles"
This informational session will introduce the network, share recent developments in the military-basing strategy of the US and others, and update on the struggles of the anti-base movements throughout the world.

Peace Boat is also supporting the activities lead by the Peace Roundtable to "Reclaim our UN." The purpose of these activities is to hammer out a strategy and a 2005 action plan for a new joint effort to create a more democratic and effective UN, for a just, peaceful, and democratic international order. An initial meeting entitled "Reclaim our UN - Agenda 2005 for a just, peaceful, and democratic international order" will be held on January 28, from 12:00 in Room H201.
