January 7, 2005 Tsunami Tragedy – Launch of Water Purification Project
The devastation in Galle, Sri Lanka
All of us at Peace Boat are horrified at the devastating impact of the tsunami tragedy of December 26. We would like to express our sincere condolences to people everywhere who have suffered the loss of loved ones, and to express our deep concern for, and solidarity with, those who have been injured, displaced and are now at risk from hunger, disease and the loss of their homes and livelihoods.
Wells have been contaminated by seawater
In the aftermath of the disaster, staff-members Yamamoto Takashi and Ueno Yoshinori have visited Sri Lanka. Peace Boat frequently calls in Sri Lanka, and we will be returning there on our upcoming 49th voyage. Following discussion with local partners, and as a short-term response, we are launching a fundraising campaign in Japan to provide water-purification equipment.

This equipment will be utilised in Galle, where wells have been contaminated by seawater. Due to the sanitation situation and concerns over the possible spread of disease, clean water is an urgent need. The placement of equipment will be organised in partnership with Sri Lankan NGO Sewa Lanka.

We will be providing further updates shortly.
