The Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) is a civilian-led initiative in response to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s call for civil society to take a more active role in conflict prevention. The GPPAC initiative also aims to explore civil society’s future interaction with the UN, governments and regional organizations in the field of conflict prevention by developing a set of recommendations that will contribute towards seeking non-violent solutions to conflict in the decades ahead.
At the Northeast Asian regional level, Seoul-based NGO Women Making Peace, Hong Kong-based network Asian Peace Alliance, and Regional Secretariat Tokyo-based international NGO Peace Boat have been co-initiating a process of research, coalition-building and advocacy that so far involves civil society organizations from Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Far East Russia and intends in include Mongolia and North Korea in the future. It is now time to stimulate interest and strengthen networks focusing on conflict prevention inside Japan.
The Japan-level process of GPPAC will be formally launched by Peace Boat at the Japan Education Centre (Nihon Kyouiku Kaikan) on Wednesday August 11, 2004 from 14:00 - 16:00 in the form of a consultation meeting followed by a press conference from 16:30 - 17:30, and a public symposium from 18:00 - 21:00. (Downloadable flyer, PDF 116 KB) This series of events will mark a timely and important beginning to the formation of a civil society conflict prevention network in Japan that promises to make a legitimate and active contribution to peace and security in our Northeast Asian region. We hope that you are able to come and participate. For more information call Johanna Stratton or Rika Watanabe at Peace Boat on 03-3363-8047 |
