Peace Boat has started The North Korea Train Disaster Humanitarian Appeal in order to raise funds to provide relief goods for the victims of the Ryongchon train disaster in North Korea. On 22 April 2004, two train wagons carrying explosives detonated at Ryongchon Station, Ryongchon Country, North Pyongan Province. At least 161 people have died, including 76 children. 360 people have been severely injured, while five other persons are still missing. The train accident also injured 1,300 people and destroyed 40 percent of the houses in the city, leaving over 10,000 people homeless. All of the forests within a three kilometer radius of the accident site have been destroyed. |

Money raised will be used to buy relief
supplies and will be given to the 'Action and Salvation Committee for the Ryonchon Train Disaster' through Peace Boat partner organization, the 'Join Together Society' (JTS), a South Korean humanitarian aid NGO with significant experience working in North Korea. Peace Boat and JTS plan to use the funds raised to buy much needed items including medical supplies (for example, antibiotics, pain relief medication, blood pressure meters, clean injection needles, burn treatment, thermometers, vitamin supplements); bedding & blankets; and building materials for housing reconstruction. Through Peace Boat's mailing lists, media releases, and street awareness-raising campaigns, it is hoped that members of the public will choose to give generously to this humanitarian campaign. |

JTS is a South Korea-based relief and development organization working to eliminate hunger, disease and illiteracy of the needy children and families in the world. As a part of their humanitarian activities, JTS organizes for the import and supply of nutritious foodstuffs including milk powder, rice, sugar and flour, as well as clothing and school supplies to North Korea via China, and delivers them to children in nurseries and kindergardens in North Korea. JTS was one of the first international NGOs to be able to enter North Korea and operate its humanitarian activities. Peace Boat launched a joint humanitarian aid campaign with JTS in 2003, raising approximately JPY 1,700,000 (approximately USD 15,080) over three months. Using these funds, Peace Boat and JTS were able to collect and deliver support goods to children in the Chinese / North Korean border area. |
