| Tokyo Still Says No to War! |
On March 20, 2004 the streets of Tokyo were filled not with shoppers, but with people saying No to war and Yes to peace.
Bitter cold and rain did little to deter nearly 60,000 individuals from joining the Global Day of Action against War and Occupation March in Tokyo, an event to mark the one-year anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq. The world's 'Other Superpower' - international civil society - demonstrated the strong anti-war sentiment that the war and occupation in Iraq has provoked. In Tokyo, voices were raised in protest at the controversial dispatch of Japan's Self Defense Forces to Iraq – a move that many believe breaches Article 9 of Japan's "peace" Constitution. |

| Rain didn't deter crowds from attending the rally |
Peace Boat staff member Yamamoto Nami helped to host the rally's afternoon of speeches, music, fundraising and performance, organized by the anti-war coalition World Peace Now. Yamamoto drew attention to the recent terrorist attacks in Madrid, reading a joint declaration by Peace Boat and Spain-based civil society organizations. On March 20, individuals and civil groups were able to transcend borders and physical distance to come together to call for a world where people the world over may live in freedom from fear and death. |
