December 25, 2003 Departure of Peace Boat's 44th Global Voyage
Bearing a huge banner to protest the dispatch of Japan's Self-Defense forces to Iraq, TSS The Topaz set sail on Peace Boat's 44th Global Voyage from the port of Tokyo, Japan on December 25, 2003.

The voyage will call at 19 ports, including our first visit to Hawaii in 10 years and a visit to Mumbai, India, to take part in the fourth World Social Forum (WSF4). On the approach to Mumbai, the onboard space will host civil society activists from Northeast Asia for dialogue on regional human security in preparation for WSF4. Following Mumbai, Peace Boat will participate in further mobilisation for the WSF process through cooperation with local activists in our ports of call and a programme onboard with youth from Argentina, Chile and Brazil. Other key issues for the voyage will include globalization and sustainable development and their connections with armed conflict.
