In Memorium: Peace Boat staff member Kumar Lewis |
|
|
The whole Peace Boat family is mourning the sudden loss of our treasured colleague and dear friend, Kumar Lewis. Kumar, who was spending some time on leave in Kenya to develop his talent for African drumming, was killed in Nairobi on March 16, 2006. He was 30 years old.
Kumar sailed first on Peace Boat's 43rd voyage in 2003, and joined three further full voyages, working with the Global English Training (GET) program, the Global University and on coordination of onboard lectures and events. Kumar was instrumental in developing the global issues component of the GET program, and passionately pursued links with the peace education community.
Kumar's deep commitment to peace and social justice was displayed in the workshops and panel discussions he organised onboard, and he played a key role in fundraising for our humanitarian campaigns in the wake of the Pakistan earthquake and Hurricane Katrina. With his talented drumming and his obvious joy as he played, he lifted the spirits of thousands of people at our onboard events and festivals around the world, proving again and again that all human beings, wherever, can dance to the same peaceful beat.
Our thoughts are with Kumar's family, especially with his mother Ilse, and his brother and sister Chinmaya and Jyoti. The family have established a beautiful website in honour of Kumar, and we encourage all those who knew him to visit www.kumarlewis.com and pay tribute with your photographs, stories and messages.
Kumar is an inspiration to us, and we pledge to honour his memory in our continued work for peace and non-violence. |
