Learning English on Peace Boat --- the GET Programme circle
Given the wealth of opportunities that Peace Boat participants have to interact with people from around the world, it is important that they are equipped as far as possible with the language skills necessary to make that interaction as fulfilling and meaningful as possible. Onboard any Peace Boat voyage, there are numerous language classes. The main language course is English, although Spanish courses are also held on every Peace Boat voyage. Previous voyages have seen classes in Russian, Vietnamese, Cantonese, French, Portuguese, Korean and even Swahili. However, English and Spanish are available on every voyage.

Peace Boat's onboard English language programme is known as GET (Global English Training). GET is a communication based programme that aims to improve students' communicative ability and instill confidence in using English through a dynamic combination of onboard classroom study, language based events and activities and exchange programmes in ports of call. Furthermore, the GET programme embraces the concept of English as global property, and aims to introduce students to some of the many different types of English used around the world today, from the English of Singapore to the English of South Africa. For teachers, too, the programme offers the opportunity to use their creativity both in and out of the classroom while enjoying the unique experience that is Peace Boat.
Who studies English onboard Peace Boat? circle
Participants onboard Peace Boat who join the language programme represent all ages and come from all walks of life. Many have studied English extensively before, while others are tackling the language for the first time. Most are motivated and eager to learn, having decided to concentrate a significant amount of their time onboard to studying. All come from Japan.
Teaching positions onboard Peace Boat circle
Teachers for the onboard programme are recruited by GET (Global English Training) Universal Co. There are between 14-18 positions available onboard each cruise, depending on student enrollment numbers. The language teaching positions are on a volunteer basis, so there is no salary. However the participation fee for the voyage, meals and accommodation onboard, port taxes, plus travel insurance for the period of the voyage are all covered by GET Universal Co. ltd.
