Study Japanese & circumnavigate the globe – a once-in-a-lifetime study opportunity!

Since 1983, Peace Boat has been offering eye opening cultural, language and communication ability learning experiences to thousands of individuals from all over Japan. Now Peace Boat hopes to extend this life-changing opportunity to students from other countries through the Global Friendship Award.

We are now inviting students enrolled at universities around the globe who are highly motivated to study Japanese, communication ability and intercultural understanding, to apply. Recipients will study every day as they travel the globe in a total immersion environment of 700-1,000 Japanese people, with the goal of promoting and fostering friendship and spreading goodwill around the world.

To celebrate Peace Boat’s ASIA-PACIFIC CONNECTIONS we have organized a special offer with an incredible free-flight deal to make our 71st Global Voyage even more accessible to Australia-based students.

Come and sail around the world with up to 1000 Japanese people from all over the country and of all ages and walks of life. Studying Japanese in an immersion environment, you’ll be part of a creative, cutting-edge Japanese community: Peace Boat is one of Japan’s largest non-profit organizations. You’ll get a unique perspective on contemporary Japan and its cultural and social concerns, while seeing and learning about the world!

This Asia-Pacific Connection program of the Global Friendship Award is open to all students interested in studying Japanese, whether enrolled at a higher educational institution, language school or pursuing independent study.

4 pillars – The four elements of the Japanese Study Programme circle
Small group study and discussion sessions outside of class are also held regularly
Peace Boat is an ideal environment for students seeking an intensive, total immersion Japanese language study programme. With Japanese cabin-mates, Japanese food, Japanese cultural events, workshops and seminars, students receive the full Japanese language and cultural exchange experience.
  1. LEARN – USE – LEARN – USE:
    Peace Boat ensures students have plenty of opportunities to use the Japanese language through daily workshops, events and study support programmes (see below).

  2. ANYWHERE, ANYTIME with ANYONE:
    Living on a boat with 700+ Japanese provides unlimited opportunities to practice and use new language learned in real-life situations.

  3. TAILORED CURRICULUM:
    To ensure each student can make the most of their studies, each individual student’s needs and goals are assessed and accounted for by our teachers when designing curricula.

  4. CULTURAL AWARENESS:
    Peace Boat is just as diverse as Japan itself and provides students with a variety of contexts to learn to use both formal and informal Japanese in culturally appropriate ways.

INTENSIVE LESSONS

Number of lessons: Each voyage offers several programme options, including for full voyages and and partial segments. The number of lessons differs for each option. Please see below.

Lesson duration: 80 minutes per day

Students per class: small group classes of 3-6 students
Curriculum tailored to each student’s needs and goals. All lessons held while ship is at sea. Students are free in ports.

Workshops: Kanji, Keigo, Giongo etc.

Chat With: Structured conversation practice

Japanese language events

Language-based events make up part of the diverse onboard learning environment. Examples include, but are by no means limited to

- Speech contest: Assistance in preparation & delivery practice provided
- Projects: Task-based group project completed and presented in Japanese: for example Video, Manga, Performance

JAPANESE CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

Performance Arts: Rakugo, Manzai, Eisa, Souran

Music: Taiko, Shamisen, Sanshin, Koto

GUEST EDUCATORS’ LECTURES (JAPANESE, ENGLISH, SPANISH)

Lectures: Guest educators, all experts in their field, are invited from all over the world to deliver lectures and workshops on local and global topics such as peace related issues, journalism, the environment, art, economics, NGOs, volunteerism and much more.

Workshops: Guest educators also deliver a diverse range of artistic and cultural workshops on board, such as drumming, dance, singing, photography and much more.

Admissions & Qualifications circle

All applicants must be able to communicate effectively in either English or Japanese.

All applicants must be enrolled at an institution of higher education & be highly motivated to study / communicate in Japanese.

This award is for students of Japanese language. Please consult with us if you are a Japanese national or if your mother tongue is Japanese.

If you are currently not a student, however wish to join us onboard as a general passenger, please do not hesitate to contact us.

A minimum of 4 scholarship recipients are required for each Programme Option segment.

Procedures for applying for Global Friendship Award circle

All scholarship award applicants must complete an essay according to the following guidelines:

Essay Topic: “Why I would like to study Japanese” *Please include your reasons for and experience of studying Japanese.

Essay length: 1 sheet of A4 sized paper (both sides may be used, max. 1,000 words)

Required Language: English or Japanese

Please also submit a brief resume, including the following information in your application:
